The Crash: Who’s to blame?

Interesting snippet from the New York Times back in 1999:

Fannie Mae, the nation’s biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.

Results rolling in

2008 Mackay Regional Council elections result
With 16 booths and more than 25% of the vote counted, my position as the number three front-runner is firming.
Big thanks to the folks at Armstrong Beach (where I topped the poll with 58.1% of the vote), Chelona (70.1%), Dundula (63.4%), Gargett (62.1%) and Racecourse (67.9%).
Beaconsfield residents are also champions for putting me in number three spot (45.8%) ahead of their own ‘Team Meng’ divisional councillor and so are Alligator Creek residents who put me in the number 2 spot (48.4%) also ahead of their ‘Team Meng’ Sarina Shire Councillor.
I’m eagerly awaiting the results of Eton, Homebush, Farleigh, Finch Hatton, Koumala, Kuttabul, Marian, Mirani, Mount Ossa, Planlands, Sarina Range, Seaforth, Shinfield and Walkerston (totalling more than 8,500 ballots) where I am hopeful my vote will be strong and either secure me in the number 3 spot or push me into number 2.

The count is on…

Alanna Volker and Libby Courtice giving out 'How to vote George Christensen' cards at the Mackay Mater Hospital

With council elections held on Saturday, the count is going incredibly slow but the good news is I am in third place right now with a lot of my ‘good booths’ yet to come.

I am sure that my result at the Mater Hospital booth will be a good one with friends Alanna Volker and Libby Courtice (above) greeting voters with my how to vote cards.

On the hustings

My regular posts have been a bit absent and probably will be until March 15 as I am out on the hustings in the middle of the Mackay Regional Council election campaign.
I have gotten around to talk to locals in Walkerston, Homebush, Eungella, Sarina and Louisa Creek and this week I am headed to the northern parts of Mackay including Seaforth and also Andergrove.
Today I feel I’m almost over the threshold where the ball you’ve been rolling to the edge of the cliff face is about ready to drop… yes, the campaign is about to gain momentum and will not stop from that point on.
My goal: to be the candidate that most people want to vote for and to encourage votes for other independent candidates.
Tomorrow, I’m actually co-hosting the breakfast show on Sea FM! Should be an experience… particularly given that the real host (Ange) was on air today saying she knew I was into karaoke. She said something about singing ABBA… oh no! What have I got myself into?

Mackay race meet cut OR How to kick a man while he’s down

While making all the right noises about helping Mackay recover from the floods, it’s disgraceful that the powers that be in the State Government controlled Queensland Racing have abandoned the next local race meeting.
The meeting which would have pulled in tens of thousands of dollars for the local racing industry as well as give locals a good social outlet for a lot of people who are a bit shell shocked here in Mackay.
The State had the option of either abandoning or transferring the meeting to another date. A further kick in the guts is that they’ve transferred meetings in Townsville and Rockhampton.
Interestingly, the Rocky transfer has been rescheduled to the date Mackay’s was going to be on “to take advantage of the vacancy created by Mackay”. Talk about kicking a man while he’s down.
